Winston Churchill was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1900 and sat in parliament with the Conservatives. After his first electoral defeat in the spring 1899, he bounced back as a war correspondent during the Second Boer War, which had broken out in South Africa on 12 October 1898. Taken prisoner, he managed to escape and then re-enlisted as an officer in the British army. He participated in the liberation of Pretoria and his former friends of detention and gained a good reputation thanks to his feats of arms which enabled him to return to England in June 1990 where he was welcomed as a hero. The time had come for him to fulfill his true ambition.
Although a member of the British aristocracy, born to a father who was a Member of Parliament, who was the youngest son of the seventh Duke of Marlborough who had not inherited the family castle and whose children could not hold the title of Lord, Churchill had to prove himself. It was this need that had dictated all his earlier decisions, it had forced him to become a career officer, to put his life on the line many times on the battlefield, because it was better for him to die than not to distinguish himself. His ambition was to become an MP like his father. He won the British general election which ended on 24 October 1900. The Conservative Party won by an absolute majority. From 1904, Winston Churchill was forced to leave the Conservatives because he chose to support free trade. In its 1900 election, the Labour Party appeared for the first time and presented its first fifteen candidates. Two of them were elected in their constituencies.
