Winston Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer until the elections of 30 May 1929 when the Conservative Party was defeated. He attended conferences in the United States which led to his presence on the New York Stock Exchange on 24 October 1929, the famous day known as Black Thursday. After that he had ten years of obscurity because he disagreed with the views of the majority of his party. He defended energetic options when the time was ripe for moderation. It was the anti-war spirit that dominated public opinion. He devoted his time to pursuing his literary work.
Following the invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany on 3 September. Winston Churchill was again given government responsibility as First Lord of the Admiralty and member of the War Cabinet on 5 September 1939.
