On 2 July 1881, James Garfield was assassinated at Washington Station. A supporter of his vice-president shot him several times in the body because he had not been chosen as consul in Paris. He died on 19 September 1881, of an infection caused by a bullet which could not be removed. He was the twentieth president of the United States elected for 1881.
