Winston Churchill resigned from the army

In October 1896, Winston Churchill was transferred to Bombay, in British India. An accomplished sportsman, he became an indispensable member of his regimental polo team. He also used his spare time to read history books, Greek philosophers and French authors. In 1897, Churchill was again a war correspondent. Then he volunteered to go and fight against the Pashtun tribes in Pakistan. His battle reports were his first published accounts in the Daily Telegraph. He also wrote for The Pioneer newspaper. Winston Churchill published The River War

On 6 November 1899 Winston Churchill published The River War, an account of the Sudan campaign and the Battle of Omdurman in two volumes. After his electoral defeat (in the spring of 1999), Churchill became a war correspondent for the Morning Post during the Second Boer War which broke out on 12 October 1899 between Britain and the Boer republics in South Africa. Always seeking notoriety, he had some trying experiences. Following scouts to the front, he was taken prisoner and held in captivity near Pretoria. He then managed to escape and travel 480 km.
