Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad near Agra, India, about 200 km southeast of New Delhi. She fought for India’s independence alongside her father Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1947. As a teenager, she organized the youth movement of her party. In this way she forged of unbreakable relationships with those who would become her party's future cadres and MPs.
